Frequently Asked Questions

PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

What is the correct combination for a hanging system, wire and hook with a painting / frame?

A picture hanging system comprises the following elements: rail, hanging wire and hanging hook. Artiteq guarantees the functionality of the products because it carefully coordinates the various elements of a picture hanging system. The quality can only be guaranteed when original (Artiteq) products are combined correctly. The guarantee is null and void if there are combinations other than with the correct Artiteq products. A frame or canvas will always hang more steadily if 2 hanging wires are used. The weight of the frame determines the choice of the hook and wire, in combination with the maximum weight carrying capacity of one metre of the rail.

Combinations wires and hooks

How long are Artiteq’s hanging systems?

Our picture rails have a standard length of 200cm. If a picture rail with, for example, a total length of 500 cm is required, three 200-cm rails would be needed. You can easily cut the rail to size.

All-in-one sets (complete sets) are available in DIY stores measuring 200 cm, 400 cm, 600 cm, etc.; all sets consist of picture rails that are 200 cm in length.

In addition to our standard length picture rail, we also offer a 300-cm picture rail. This special picture rail is only available on request. This rail is often used for (larger) construction projects. Due to their length, 300 cm rails can only be shipped within the Netherlands and Belgium via the webshop.

In which colours is Artiteq’s picture hanging system available?

The picture hanging system is available in the colours: white (cream) RAL9010, white primed finish RAL9016 (this can be repainted in a different colour if you wish), brushed aluminium and black structured. Not every picture hanging system in our range is available in these 4 colours, see the list of colours available for each rail here.

ASSEMBLY

Practical

Can I install a rail without drilling?

Yes, you can. In situations where drilling is not desired or not possible, our Contour Rail Glued offers a solution. This rail can be mounted to the wall using adhesive.

Please note: when using adhesive, the load capacity is lower (10 kg per meter) than with screw mounting (20 kg per meter).

How do I install a rail on the ceiling?

Use the Up Rail or R40 Rail for ceiling mounting. These systems are specially designed for ceiling installation and support up to 20 kg/m. Our Top Rail is used in combination with a suspended ceiling and also supports up to 20 kg/m.

What do I need for installation?

Each rail is supplied with a mounting kit and installation manual. All you need is a drill, a spirit level, and a screwdriver.

See here how to install our picture hanging systems.

Can I glue a picture hanging rail to the wall?

All of our picture hanging systems are normally mounted with screws to the wall or ceiling. In situations where drilling is not an option, our Contour Rail can be installed using adhesive. Please note that the load capacity will be slightly lower compared to screw mounting.

Can you attach a hanging rail to a curved or circular wall?

That’s possible, though only the Click Rail is suitable for this purpose. You can bend the Click Rail around a curved wall with a minimum radius of 10 metres. This will result in slight curvature of the rail. Would you like to learn more about this? Please feel free to contact us.

What type of walls can I attach the hanging systems to?

In principle, our hanging systems can be attached to all conventional wall types (i.e. concrete, brick, hollow brick, sand-lime brick, plaster, plasterboard walls, wood, etc.). Of course, the load also depends on the total strength and construction of the wall itself. When mounting the hanging system on walls with a less solid construction, it is advisable not to fully utilise the maximum load of the system.

We supply Fisher plugs with the majority of our sets, which are suitable for most solid and hollow walls. Some very uncommon walls may require different, more specific plugs.

When in doubt, ask for advice from a builder, a skilled DIYer, or your local hardware store.

For more information on plugs and screws, read here.

Can the rail be mounted on a sloping wall?

The wall systems can be mounted on a sloping wall. The rail is installed in just the same way it would be on a straight wall. The hanging rail must be positioned in such a way that the rail itself doesn’t slide down. You should use a Stopper Set to hang frames/pictures on a sloping wall.  This Stopper Set will keep the hanging wire in the right place, and the wall decoration will hang straight. The stopper locks the hanging wire by tightening the socket head screw in the stopper. The stopper will always be positioned lower than the hanging wire. When mounting a picture hanging system on a sloping wall, we advise that you use Solid Slider hanging wires. When using a Stopper Set, the maximum weight of a frame is 4 kg.

Drilling & Assembly

Which size drill should I use?

The drill size depends on which hanging system you install. If you are going to drill a hole, it is important to match the diameters of the plug and the drill.

  • For a 5-mm Fischer Duo Power plug, use a 5-mm drill
  • For a 6-mm plug, use a 6-mm drill
  • For a 4-mm plug, use a 4-mm drill

How do I drill holes in order to fasten the clips when mounting the Click Rail to the ceiling?

You can mark out the holes by using the Click&Connect feature as a template. The clips are designed such that the screws can be inserted diagonally up to a 10° angle, after which the rail can be mounted to the ceiling. If this angle is too small or if you would like to drill at a straighter angle, we recommend that you use a longer drill or a special drill with a compact head.

Mount the first clip about 10cm from end of rail.

View here the Click Rail drill instruction

How can I mount several rails adjacent to one another?

If you mount the Click & Connect connector piece exactly between two rails, the rail will continue smoothly and the joint between the two rails will be barely visible.

How can I mount the rail at a corner?

Corner connectors can be used for a flawless finish. The corner connectors can be ordered separately.

At what distance from the ceiling can I mount a wall rail?

All rails can be mounted flush against the ceiling with the exception of the Contour Rail which has to be fitted at least 15 mm beneath the ceiling.

For the integrated picture hanging systems (Shadowline), the right solution depends on the specific application and situation.

The screws to be used for the Top Rail are larger than the holes in the rail.

We recommend that you drive the screws into the rail beforehand. The best way to insert the screws into the holes is by twisting them one-quarter turn until they are tightly secured inside the rail. Since the aluminium is fairly pliable, you can use the screw thread to make a slight incision. You can then easily feed the rail into the ceiling in one easy step.

Can I dismount my picture hanging system and reinstall it in another location?

The rail is affixed quite firmly to the clips because it must be fastened safely and securely. The system is essentially designed to be mounted once. If you disassemble all the parts, it is important that you carefully examine each component and replace any damaged parts. After you disassemble the system, you must always replace the clips and plugs with new ones.

The best way to remove the rail from the clips is by loosening the rail from the clip at the bottom (directly on the clip) using a flat screwdriver. You must start on one of the sides and then work from there to the left or right. In order to prevent wall damage (or at least keep it to a minimum), we recommend that you place a steel or aluminium sheet beneath the screwdriver. Depending on the type of wall, the plug may be pulled out of the wall.

Finishing

How can you give the rail a nice finish?

The Artiteq picture hanging systems can be mounted to the wall flush against the ceiling. A ceiling may not always be straight, leaving spaces in between the rail and ceiling. By applying a sealant edge to the top (and if required, the bottom) of the rail, this will fit nice and flush and will integrate nicely into the wall.

Extra tips

  • If a picture rail is chosen in the colour White Primed Finish RAL9016, the picture rail can be painted in the same colour as the wall or ceiling. The rail will then ‘become one’ with the wall and it will be almost invisible.
  • Preferably install the rail across the full length of the wall. This allows the system to blend even more subtly into the interior.

What type of paint should I use to overpaint my rail?

Artiteq profiles are lacquered using a polyester-based powder coating which is generally easy to overpaint. The primer version can be overpainted using commonly available lacquers (latex-based, acrylic-based or alkyd-based). If you intend to overpaint the profiles, you must first prepare the surface. It is sufficient to remove any excess grease (preferably using surgical spirit) and slightly polishing it with fine sandpaper.

Can I reduce the length of the rail?

The aluminium profiles can be easily customised by trimming them with a metal saw to reduce their length. It is recommended that you use a miter box to make a straight, rectangular cut.

HANGING WIRES & HOOKS

Wat is de levensduur van de ophangdraden?

In principe gaan staaldraden levenslang mee.

I have noticed that the perlon cord turns upward. How can I straighten it?

You may find that the perlon cord curls up after the perlon has been rolled up for an extended period of time. The weight of the frame is usually enough to straighten the wire again. If this does not achieve the desired effect, you may want to try hanging a weight on the wire over an extended period of time. You can accelerate this process by first soaking the wires in warm (not boiling or hot) water for several hours.

What is the difference between a perlon wire and a steel wire?

A perlon wire is a plastic transparent wire. Artiteq offers perlon hanging wires in a 1-mm and 2-mm thickness and in different lengths between 150 and 300 cm. There is also a choice of perlon wires with a glider or twister system. This means that the hanging wire is placed differently in the hanging rail. The advantage of the perlon hanging wires is that these are transparent and are therefore almost invisible against a wall.

As well as the perlon hanging wires, Artiteq also offers steel wire. The colour of the wire is trendy and more striking. Artiteq offers steel wire in a 1-mm and 2-mm thickness and in different lengths between 150 and 300 cm.

Which hanging wires and hooks should I choose for Artiteq’s hanging systems?

Artiteq offers transparent perlon hanging wires and steel wires for hanging wall decorations on an Artiteq picture hanging system. Artiteq offers both the perlon hanging wires and the steel wires in a 1-mm and 2-mm thickness and in different lengths from 150 cm to 300 cm. The weight of a frame or a different wall decoration determines the choice of hanging hook.  With a maximum weight carrying capacity ranging from 4 kg to 20 kg, there is a wide choice of Artiteq hanging hooks. In addition to the weight of the wall decoration, the choice also depends on the look you wish to achieve. The perlon hanging wires are almost invisible. The steel cable hanging wires, also available in 1-mm steel wire black, are suitable for hanging heavier wall decorations.

Please refer to this compatibility list.

How do I use a hanging hook correctly?

The maximum load capacity of a hanging hook only applies when the frame or picture is correctly positioned on the hook.

See here the correct way of loading and using the hook.

PARTS & COMPATIBILITY

Do all hanging wires and hooks fit in every rail?

Yes, all Twister 1 mm, Twister 2 mm, Twister Cliq2Fix, Solid Slider and Slider Economy hanging wires (both perlon and steel wire) are compatible with all Artiteq picture hanging systems. These can be used in wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted and recessed hanging systems.

View all our hanging wires here. You can also find the compatibility overview for hanging wires and hooks here.

Are all hooks suitable for all hanging wires?

With the exception of the 1 mm hanging wires and the Micro Grip 1 mm hook, all hooks can be combined with our 2 mm perlon and steel wires.

View the compatibility overview for our hanging wires and hooks here.

Can I use parts from other brands with Artiteq rails?

We do not recommend this. Our rails, hanging wires and hooks are precisely matched to ensure optimal safety and load capacity. Our systems are carefully tested according to TÜV guidelines.

Because we only test our own products within our systems, we cannot guarantee the performance and load capacity of products from other brands.

Read more about our TÜV certification here.

Can I replace my existing rail without drilling new holes?

Yes, as long as it is the same model. For standard sizes, the drill holes are positioned in the same place. Always check this in advance.

For optimal and secure installation, we recommend using new clips and wall plugs.

How do you hang an aluminium mounted photo (with a smooth back) on an Artiteq hanging system?

We offer two different options for hanging a photo printed on aluminium: the Artiteq Back Frame Hanging system, or a Dibond Hanger.

Artiteq Back Frame Hanging system
The Artiteq Back Frame Hanging System is an invisible hanging system developed especially for hanging thin and flexible wall panels made of aluminium (Dibond), Forex or Plexiglas. The frames are attached to the back of the wall panel and are therefore not visible from the front.

Using Power Corners, panels which have already been mounted can easily be straightened.

Dibond Hanger
The Dibond Hanger is a self-adhesive hook made of galvanised steel. This invisible hanging system is attached to the back of a Dibond, Forex or Plexiglas wall panel, allowing them to be hung. The Dibond Hanger is available in different sizes: 45x45mm, 70x70mm 100x100mm and 100x200mm. The size of the Dibond Hanger to be used depends on the weight of the wall panel.

45x45mm > max. weight 1kg
70x70mm > max. weight 2kg
100x100mm > max. weight 4kg
100x200mm > max. weight 8kg

How do I prevent frames from tilting forward?

Frames suspended from a cord are always tilted slightly forward. You may have seen this in museums, where it is done deliberately in order to prevent glare. How far the frame tilts forward and how this can be avoided depends on a number of factors (see instructions here below). For further tips and suggestions, please read here.

Instruction tilting frames

What can I hang up using Artiteq’s hanging systems?

The weight of the frame/picture/artwork or wall decoration determines the choice of hook and wire, in combination with the maximum weight carrying capacity of one metre of the rail. Artiteq guarantees the functionality of the products because it carefully coordinates the various elements of a picture hanging system. The quality can only be guaranteed when original Artiteq products are combined correctly.

As well as hanging pictures, frames, artwork, wall hangings and plant pots, the Artiteq picture hanging systems are also suitable for hanging whiteboards, bulletin boards and glass boards. Artiteq has developed a special Whiteboard Set for hanging whiteboards. This set ensures stable mounting of a Whiteboard to a wall.

View all our rail systems here.

Can I move around my wall decoration with the hanging wire?

A picture/frame/wall decoration can be moved around using the hanging wire in the rail, provided that you keep hold of the wall decoration whilst moving this. It is important that the wire at the top of the rail is moved correctly and that you firmly hold the picture that is being moved. To be able to move wall decorations easily on the rail, we advise you to remove the picture from the hook. First move the hanging wire to the required position, adjust the hook to the required height and then hang the picture firmly on the hanging hook.

ARTITEQ WALL SYSTEMS

Click Rail

Can I replace my existing Click Rail without drilling new holes?

Yes, you can. If you use the same type of Click & Connect clips, the mounting screws will be positioned in the same place. Always check that your existing clips are still in good condition and that the new rail model uses the same clip spacing.

For optimal and secure installation, we recommend using new clips and wall plugs.

How high should I install the Click Rail?

The standard and most commonly used height is 2–6 cm below the ceiling.
This makes the rail as discreet as possible and allows the hanging wires to drop freely.

Ceiling-flush installation is also possible (see the next question).

Can I install the Click Rail flush to the ceiling?

Yes. Mount the clips directly underneath the ceiling.
Please note that the ceiling should be straight for the best visual result.

Any small gaps can be neatly finished with caulk.

What is the maximum weight per metre?

The Click Rail supports up to 30 kg per metre, provided it is correctly installed on a suitable surface using the original Artiteq mounting materials.

Can I paint over the Click Rail?

Yes. The paintable version is supplied as standard with a White Primer (RAL9016) coating, making it easy to paint over using water-based paint.

Yes. Use solid concrete plugs and screws of the correct length to ensure maximum safety and stability.

ARTITEQ INTEGRATED SYSTEMS

What is an integrated picture hanging system?

An integrated picture hanging system is built into the wall or ceiling during renovation or new construction, making it completely invisible after finishing. This allows you to maintain clean, seamless walls while still being able to hang and reposition wall décor flexibly, without tools or visible rails.

Which integrated hanging systems does Artiteq offer?

Artiteq offers four integrated systems that can be built in during construction or renovation:

These systems integrate seamlessly into the interior and remain fully concealed after installation.

Shadowline rails

What is the difference between Shadowline Drywall and Shadowline Masonry?

Shadowline Drywall

  • Installed between plasterboard panels (wall and ceiling)
  • The rail disappears into the subtle shadow gap between wall and ceiling
  • Hanging wires emerge directly from the ceiling
  • Ideal for new builds and renovations using drywall construction
  • The most discreet option, especially when combined with transparent perlon wires

Shadowline Masonry

  • Specifically developed for masonry walls
  • Mounted directly onto the stone wall before the ceiling panels are installed
  • The rail is fully concealed in the shadow gap next to the ceiling
  • Offers the same flexibility without any visible profile

How does the Shadowline integrated system work?

The Shadowline profile is installed behind plasterboard or alongside ceiling panels during construction. After finishing, only a subtle shadow line remains visible, with the hanging wires emerging from it.

Benefits include:

  • a completely invisible rail
  • clean, undamaged walls
  • hanging wires can be positioned anywhere along the rail
  • artwork can be rearranged later without tools
  • suitable for drawings, photos, frames, and paintings

Deco Rail

How does the Deco Rail work?

The Deco Rail is mounted behind a cornice or decorative moulding. The rail is completely hidden, while still offering the same flexibility as a visible hanging rail.

Benefits:

  • rail concealed behind the moulding
  • high-quality finish for both classic and modern interiors
  • walls remain smooth and undamaged
  • hanging wires can be clicked into place anywhere along the rail

Artiteq offers the Deco Rail in combination with three cornice styles:

  • Basic
  • Modern
  • Classic

Can the Deco Rail be installed behind any type of cornice?

Yes. The rail fits behind most standard cornices and decorative mouldings. You are not limited to the three Artiteq styles, these are simply suggested options.

What is the Deco Rail LED system?

This is a special lighting cornice (profile C362) that allows you to combine indirect wall lighting with an invisible hanging system.

Key features:

the Deco Rail is installed behind the lighting profile

the rail remains completely hidden

walls stay clean and undamaged

flexible wall arrangement is always possible

The Newly R70 Museum Line rail is mounted on the wall. A dowel and screw is placed every 40 cm. Mount the rail over the entire wall first and then install the cover cap.

Tips for mounting the Newly R70 Museum Line rail

  • We recommend mounting the rail over the entire wall first and then place the cover cap on it.
  • Start with one length and work your way to the other side.
  • Where the rails are to join together, we recommend using the factory saw cuts as much as possible.
  • When drilling, align the holes with the center of the rail holes.
  • Use the mounting plate to correct the height of the rail. The mounting plate has an adjustment range of 5mm to accommodate any drilling deviations. Slide the mounting plate left or right to correct. Tighten the bolt to fix it.
  • Thanks to the mounting plate, the rail can also be adjusted horizontally and the ends of two rails can be horizontally aligned.
  • Only after the entire wall is properly aligned and the bolts are sufficiently tightened, install the cover caps on it.

How do I install the cover cap of the Newly R70 Museum Line rail?

The Newly R70 Museum Line rail cover is clicked onto the rail. It is recommended that the seams of the cover cap not coincide with the seams of the rail itself. Disassembly of the cover cap is not necessary while the rail is in use.

Tips for fitting the Newly R70 Museum Line rail cover

  • We recommend placing the cover over the rail so that the seams do not coincide with the seams of the rail itself. The cover cap will then be co-aligned with the rail, allowing seams to fit snugly and preventing height discrepancies at the seam.
  • The cover is hooked onto the rail from the bottom and then clicked into place at the top by hand. Start clicking on the end and work toward the other side.
  • If the wall is not properly level, the rail may “wave” slightly with the wall when tightening. This may make it more difficult to snap on the cover. If necessary, use a plastic hammer to tap the cover lightly to lock it in place.
  • Make sure that the length of the final cover is correct before clicking it into place.
  • The cover is firmly fixed to the rail after it is clicked into place. There are a few reasons for this: Due to deviations in the flatness of the wall, there are also deviations in the straightness of the rail. The rail will follow the wall when the screws are tightened. Due to these deviations, there may be some stresses on the click connection. Due to the load on the rail from the wires (up to max. 70kg per wire), the rail will be able to bend/deform (minimally). This will also cause some tension on the click connection. The solid click connection prevents slipping.

Can I remove the cover of the Newly R70 Museum Line rail?

In principle, it is not necessary to remove the cover when the rail is in use. The cover is installed once.

Should the rail nevertheless need to be dismantled, the cover can be removed by prying it off from one side using, for example, a screwdriver or suitable pliers. After the cover is partially loosened on one side, you can continue to dismantle the cover from there to the other side. We recommend not reusing damaged parts.

In case prying loose from one side is not possible, a small hole can be drilled at the end of the cover. Screw in a screw until the cover itself comes up.
