Hanging without drilling in any living and working environment
Hang heavy paintings: safely and without having to drill again and again

Hang heavy paintings: safely and without having to drill again and again

Do you want to hang a heavy painting? With large paintings, heavy frames and artworks, it is especially important to choose a hanging system that matches both the weight of the artwork and the surface on which the system is mounted.

With an Artiteq picture hanging system, you install the rail once on the wall or ceiling. After that, you can hang, move and replace pictures using hanging cords, rods and hooks without having to drill new holes in the wall every time you change the position.

From a large picture at home to heavy artworks in a gallery or museum: Artiteq offers various hanging systems with load capacities of up to 200 kg per metre.

How do you hang a heavy picture safely?

When hanging a heavy picture, it is not only the attachment to the picture itself that matters. The complete hanging system must be suitable for the weight.

A picture hanging system generally consists of three components:
• the picture rail;
• the hanging cord or hanging rod;
• the picture hook.

The maximum load is always determined by the combination of these components and by the way the rail is fixed to the wall or ceiling.

A rail with a load capacity of, for example, 100 kg per metre does not automatically mean that every individual 100 kg picture can be suspended from one cord and one hook. The load capacity of the cord, hook, fixing points and supporting surface must also be sufficient.
For heavy artworks in particular, it is therefore important to make sure that all components of the hanging system are properly matched.

Hanging a heavy picture without having to drill again and again

Hanging a heavy picture completely without drilling is not advisable in every situation. Especially at higher weights, the fixing must be reliable.

The advantage of a picture rail is that you only install the rail once. After that, you do not need to drill into the wall again when you want to hang a picture higher, lower or in a different position.

This makes a picture hanging system particularly suitable for spaces where art and wall decoration are changed regularly, such as homes, offices, galleries, museums and exhibition spaces.

Which hanging system do you need for a heavy picture?

The right hanging system depends on the weight of the artwork, the type of frame and the application. Artiteq offers various systems for heavier to very heavy pictures.

Click Rail Pro: for heavy pictures up to 50 kg per metre

The Click Rail Pro is a strong picture hanging system for heavy pictures, frames and wall decorations. The rail has a maximum load capacity of 50 kg per metre.

The Click Rail Pro is mounted to the wall using Click & Connect clips and can be installed flush against the ceiling. After installation, suitable hanging cords or rods can be placed at any desired position in the rail.

This allows you to move or replace heavy pictures easily without drilling new holes in the wall.

The Click Rail Pro is suitable for both homes and professional environments such as galleries and smaller exhibition spaces.

Double Wall Track: discreet hanging system up to 80 kg per
metre

For larger and heavier artworks, the Double Wall Track offers a compact and professional solution with a load capacity of up to 80 kg per metre.

The system consists of two parts: a strong base rail that is fixed to the wall and a cover that is placed over the rail and sliders. This creates a neat, discreet finish in which the hanging system draws as little attention as possible.

A special Slider is placed in the rail and a steel cord is attached to it. The Slider can be positioned and secured anywhere along the rail. This allows artworks to be positioned flexibly and moved later.

The Double Wall Track is particularly suitable for museums, galleries and exhibition spaces where heavy artworks need to be hung safely and flexibly while a neat, subtle finish remains important.

Classic Rail+: traditional hanging system for heavy art

For those looking for a classic rail system with hanging rods, the Classic Rail+ offers a strong solution.

The current Classic Rail+ has been developed for hanging heavy pictures and artworks and has a load capacity of up to 100 kg per metre when used with the rods and hooks designed for the system.

The open J-profile makes it easy to place rods in the rail, move them and remove them again. This type of hanging system is widely used in galleries, museums and exhibition spaces where flexibility and a high load capacity are important.

With the Classic Rail+, it is important to combine the rail with the correct rod and picture hook. The load capacity of each individual hanging point remains decisive for the weight that can be suspended safely.

R70 Rail: for very heavy pictures and artworks

The R70 Rail has been developed for very heavy pictures. This robust rail system has a maximum load capacity of 100 kg per metre and is suitable for professional applications.

An important advantage of the R70 Rail is that different types of hanging cords can be used within the same system. This means that both lighter artworks and very heavy works can be displayed from the
same rail.

For heavy-duty applications, the R70 Rail can be combined with a 2.5 mm steel cord and an Auto Grip Lock hook with a load capacity of up to 70 kg.

This makes the system particularly suitable for museums, galleries and exhibition spaces where large and heavy artworks need to be hung safely and flexibly.

Heavy Duty Track: for extremely heavy artworks

When a standard picture rail does not provide sufficient load capacity, the Heavy Duty Track is the solution.

This steel rail has a load capacity of up to 200 kg per metre and has been developed for very heavy artworks and professional applications.

The Heavy Duty Track can be mounted on the wall or ceiling and can also be recessed. In the latter case, it creates an especially subtle solution in which the rail almost completely disappears from
view.

Special Slides are placed and secured in the Heavy Duty Track. Suitable steel cords are attached to these so that the artwork can be displayed in the desired position.

The Heavy Duty Track is particularly interesting for museums, galleries, exhibition spaces and other projects where exceptionally heavy artworks need to be supported safely.

The right picture hook for a heavy picture

A strong picture rail alone is not enough. The hanging cord and picture hook must also be suitable for the weight of the artwork.

Various combinations are available within the Artiteq range.

For heavier pictures, for example, a 2 mm Twister hanging cord can be used in combination with a suitable hook. The Micro Grip 2 mm can carry up to 20 kg.

For even heavier artworks, stronger solutions are available, such as a 2.5 mm steel cord combined with the Auto Grip Lock hook with a load capacity of up to 70 kg.

The heavier and wider a picture is, the more important it becomes to use multiple hanging points. With two hanging cords and hooks, the weight is distributed more evenly and a wide artwork will generally hang more steadily and be easier to level.

Always check which combination of rail, hanging cord and hook is suitable for the total weight of the artwork.

Hanging a large and heavy picture

Not only the weight, but also the size of a picture plays a role.

A large artwork can be relatively light, while a smaller picture can weigh a great deal because of a heavy frame. Large and wide artworks also often hang more steadily when the weight is distributed across two hanging points.

Before choosing the system, determine:

  • the total weight of the picture and frame;
  • the width and height of the artwork;
  • the number of hanging points required;
  • the type of wall or ceiling;
  • how often you want to be able to move the artwork;
  • whether additional protection against shifting or removal is desired.

Based on these factors, you can determine which rail, cord and hook best suit your situation.

Hanging a heavy picture on a plasterboard wall

Hanging a heavy picture on a plasterboard wall requires extra attention.

Not every plasterboard wall can carry the same load. The final load capacity depends, among other things, on the construction of the wall, the position of the supporting structure behind it
and the fixing materials used.

For heavy and very heavy artworks, it is therefore important that the picture rail is fixed in a structurally suitable way. A high load capacity of the rail itself is not sufficient if the wall fixing cannot support that load.

Always check the installation instructions and use fixing materials that are suitable for the wall concerned. For very heavy artworks, or if you are unsure about the wall construction, professional
installation advice is recommended.

Hanging a heavy Dibond or acrylic panel

A heavy artwork does not always have to be a framed picture. Large panels made of materials such as Dibond or acrylic can also be quite heavy.

For this type of wall decoration, a concealed fixing can be an attractive option, with the hanging system hidden behind the panel. Depending on the material, size and weight, options include the Dibond Hanger and the Back Frame Hanging System.

Would you like to know how a panel like this can be displayed without visible fixings? See our information about concealed hanging systems or read the specific advice on hanging Dibond and
acrylic panels.

Which Artiteq hanging system should you choose?

For heavy artworks, the various systems can broadly be divided as follows:

Click Rail Pro – 50 kg/m

A strong and flexible picture rail for heavier pictures and frames, suitable for both residential and professional applications.

Double Wall Track – 80 kg/m

A compact and discreet wall system for larger and heavier artworks, with a cover for a neat finish. Particularly suitable for museums, galleries and exhibition spaces.

Classic Rail+ – 100 kg/m

A traditional rail system with rods for heavy artworks, offering a high load capacity and plenty of flexibility for gallery and museum applications.

R70 Rail – 100 kg/m

A robust professional hanging system for heavy and very heavy artworks that can be combined with different cord thicknesses.

Heavy Duty Track – 200 kg/m

The highest-capacity rail solution in the range, developed for exceptionally heavy artworks and professional projects.

Which system is most suitable ultimately depends on more than the load capacity of the rail alone. The weight of the artwork, hanging cord, hook, wall construction and number of hanging points must be assessed together.

Hanging heavy pictures flexibly and safely

With the right picture hanging system, you do not have to make new holes in the wall every time you want to reposition a heavy artwork.

Once the rail has been installed, you can hang, move, raise, lower and replace artworks. This not only provides flexibility, but also helps keep the wall neat when the interior layout changes.

From a heavy picture at home to large artworks in a museum: with systems including the Click Rail Pro, Double Wall Track, Classic Rail+, R70 Rail and Heavy Duty Track, Artiteq offers solutions for different weight classes and applications.
