How high do you hang a picture?
The ideal height to hang a picture is 145 cm. You measure this height from the floor to the centre of the picture. This is known as ‘eye level’ and in museums, pictures usually also hang at this height. However, if you wish to hang a picture above a sofa, table or other object, a different height may be better. In this blog, we therefore explain the best height for hanging a picture in different situations.
How high do you hang a picture above a sofa?
Above a sofa is a popular place to hang a picture. In terms of the height, we generally recommend hanging the picture at least 100 cm above your sofa. This gives the picture the space it deserves and it doesn’t look cramped.
If you decide to hang one picture, it’s best to choose a picture that is proportional to the sofa, so 2/3 of the width of the sofa is perfect.
How high do you hang a picture above a table?
If you wish to hang a picture above a table, it’s best to keep to the standard height of 145 cm. Make sure that the size of the picture is in proportion to the table. It’s usually more aesthetically pleasing to hang a larger picture along the length of the table as opposed to the width.
How high do you hang a picture above a bed?
As is the case when hanging a picture above a sofa, you should leave a distance of at least 100 cm between a bed and a picture. A popular trend, which also looks great, is to choose a broad picture that is approximately 80% of the width of the bed.
Hanging a picture based on gut feel
The above advice is, of course, general advice based on people’s preferences. You may have a different taste, and that is absolutely fine! A picture could be hung at a different height to complement the way in which a room is furnished. That’s why you should enjoy experimenting with different positions, then just see which you like best.
